Maricopa County Animal Care & Control is seeking a motivated and diligent Lead Shelter Associate to provide daily care and support for our shelter animals. You will provide leadership and guidance to our team of Shelter Associates while advocating for the animals in our care and promoting the health, safety, and welfare of the people and animals of Maricopa County. This position requires the employee in office and customer facing for all hours worked.

We Require
- Two years of experience with domestic animals in an animal welfare organization, veterinary facility, humane society, or similar animal care facility
- One year of in-person customer service work experience
- High school diploma or GED
- Candidates must be flexible and able to work all shifts, including starting as early as 6 am and finishing as late as 9 pm, working weekends and holidays. Shelter Associates are assigned on any shift, with any combination of days off, determined by the needs of the Department.
- Must complete animal handling training within 3 months of employment

Job Contributions
- Administer supervision, direction, guidance, and timely coaching for Shelter Associates, ensuring daily tasks are completed efficiently and accurately
- Ensure that all shelter animals are properly housed and cared for within the guidelines of the Five Domains of Animal Welfare and that Fear-Free and positive reinforcement methods are employed
- Oversee and participate in the daily kennel cleaning, laundry, dishes, feeding, adoption duties, and welfare rounds
- Ensure staff and volunteers are onboarded, trained, and follow set policies and practices of both ACC and PetSmart
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written skills, including clear and effective communication with others (staff, public, volunteers) that is professional, respectful, positive, and educational
- Facilitate the day-to-day operations of the adoption center, including supply needs, accurate data entry, money handling, and opening and closing duties
- Participate in transferring animals from MCACC into and out of the EAC through loading and unloading transports and updating animal locations and records
- Maintain detailed and accurate records, providing reports as necessary
- Participate in drafting staff schedules and ensuring adequate and proper coverage of the center
- Conduct additional animal handling as needed, including restraint, walking, playgroups, and other duties
Working Conditions
- Work is predominately performed in an animal shelter with exposure to extreme and varying temperatures, excessive noise, dogs and cats with unknown temperaments or behaviors, animal waste and fluids, deceased animals, cleaning chemicals, and zoonotic diseases
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk on all types of surfaces that are sometimes slippery, uneven, and rough
- The position requires animal handling
- Must be able to lift up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly
