Oregon City Parks and Recreation is hiring Recreation Leaders to be counselors for our Day Camps.
We are hiring Recreation Leaders for our Summer Day Camps that take place from June 23rd-August 22nd. All seasonal positions are required to be here for at least 7 of the 9 weeks of camps. Training for Camps will take place on June 17 and 18.
The shifts being hired for are:
For our Camp that takes place at The Oregon City Swimming Pool, the shifts being hired for are:
- Shift A: Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:30pm
- Shift B: Monday-Friday 8:30am-2:00pm with on call from 2:00pm-5:30pm
- Shift C: Monday-Friday 12:00pm-5:30pm with on call from 8:30am-12:00pm
For our Camp that takes place at Rivercrest Park, the shifts being hired for are:
- Shift A: Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm
- Shift B: Monday-Friday 8:30am-1:00pm with on call from 1:00pm-5:30pm
- Shift C: Monday-Friday 11:00am-4:30pm with on call 8:30am-11:00am
Classification SummaryThis position assists to provide a wide range of activities, monitors events, classes, and programs including but not limited to camp programs, special events, leisure enrichment classes, youth and adult sports, city special events, administrative support and customer service at Park and Recreation facilities. Recreation Leaders work with the Recreation Leads to provide weekly camp activities based on the themes of the week. Based on experience, Recreation Leaders may act as a primary liaison between parents and camp staff and are responsible to ensure campers receive quality care.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities- Effectively mentors and leads campers participating in programs.
- Monitors activities; speaks with participants, or parents of program participants as necessary regarding their concerns and complaints, disciplines program participants as needed, while maintaining a positive learning environment.
- Coordinates, organizes, and directs games, songs, crafts, and other recreational activities.
- Provide excellent internal and external customer service. Create a positive experience for customers through professional and courteous behavior. Provides information on camp activities and questions about the registration process.
- Assists in the daily camp preparation and clean up at the end of each day.
- Provide oversight for the performance of general housekeeping duties in and around the camp location.
- Participates in and contributes to staff meetings, trainings, and team building.
- Complete applicable reports and records. Assures documentation for all incidents and daily cleaning logs.
- Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.
- May also assist at recreation events and other programs within the department.
- Perform other work as necessary and or as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsKnowledgeThe position requires specialized knowledge of:
- Must contain knowledge on how to lead games, crafts, activities, outdoor recreation, sports, and more. Must have knowledge for principles and practices of leadership and group organization, planning and implementation of a recreational program. Must know how to maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and other staff members.
Skills and AbilitiesThis position requires the ability to carry out, but is not limited to, the following functions:
- Requires well-developed language skills to write activity descriptions and communicate with parents. Skills required in decision making. Requires well-developed human relations skills to convey concepts and conduct training and use courtesy when working with others. Counselors require skills to be collaborative, personable, and communicate effectively. Requires skills in
- Ability to carry out essential accountability of the position. Requires the ability to interpret, explain, and follow safe camp counselor practices. Requires the ability to work with minimal supervision. Requires the maintenance of a neat, professional appearance. Requires the ability to identify hazards, implement solutions, maintain safe environments. Requires the ability to follow written and oral instructions; speak clearly and concisely in English. Assume a schedule of flexible working hours, including weekends and evenings. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including copy machine, phone system, and computer. Requires the ability to communicate courteously and cooperatively with other staff and the general public, on the telephone or in person, including handling difficult or irate people. Requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other staff members, program participants and the general public.
Education, Training, and Experience- Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and experience is qualifying.
Other Requirements- Must pass a criminal background check.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications or obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Bilingual preferred
Working Conditions/Physical and Mental DemandsIncumbent must be able to function effectively indoors and outdoors in a classroom, sports court, park trail or similar environment engaged in work of primarily a moderately active nature. Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to stand, walk and demonstrate activities for extended periods of time, lift and move medium weight materials up to 50 pounds, and move to various work locations. Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity to demonstrate physical activities and use a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and customers in one-on-one and small group settings. Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and labels and to observe students perform tests and assignments.
