Join us as the City of Durango’s Safety/Risk Administrator, where you’ll help create a safe environment and improve the well-being of our workforce. In this role, you’ll be responsible for planning and implementing city-wide safety programs and risk management practices. Reporting to the Human Resources Director, you’ll advocate for a culture of safety, compliance, and proactive risk prevention. You’ll also manage insured and uninsured losses, along with liability and workers’ compensation coverage.
This role offers the unique opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across all city departments, improving operations and equipping them with safety training and resources. You’ll engage in hands-on problem-solving, from conducting on-site accident investigations to identifying potential risks and recommending practical solutions for mitigation. You’ll use computer software to plan and monitor safety and risk management programs, ensuring our strategies are data-driven and effective. Your contributions will make a difference in the lives of our employees and the community we serve.
What You’ll Do in This Role:
- Develop and oversee city-wide safety and risk management policies, ensuring all departments follow them.
- Administer workers’ compensation, property, and casualty insurance programs, including policy and endorsement maintenance.
- Lead employee safety initiatives, uphold compliance with commercial driving regulations, and manage the random drug testing program.
- Set up processes for reporting accidents and managing claims, working closely with injured employees and appropriate healthcare professionals.
- Conduct on-site investigations of major accidents and report findings to administrators and insurance representatives.
- Inspect city facilities, properties, and work sites for safety issues and evaluate city operations for potential risks, recommending strategies and improvements to reduce them.
- Manage investigations and settlements for third-party liability and property damage claims.
- Process claims and lawsuits against the city, preparing necessary information and dispositions as needed.
- Develop and maintain an information system for recording risk-related costs and information.
- Plan and monitor a safety/risk management program using computer software.
- Analyze risk exposure data to identify occurrences and financial consequences.
- Complete renewal applications for property/casualty and workers’ compensation programs and the annual audit of workers’ compensation.
- Prepare and maintain accurate statistical, narrative, and other records and reports.
- Create and deliver presentations.
You Have:
- Equivalent to completion of high school or GED.
- Three years of experience working in risk management, safety, compliance, or insurance work.
- Understanding of key risk management principles, including workers’ compensation, insurance, and market dynamics.
- Familiarity with important federal, state, and local regulations, including those related to liability, contracts, risk financing, occupational health, and safety standards.
- Skill in overseeing and enhancing safety and risk management efforts across diverse departments and settings, addressing a wide range of work-related risks.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, standard safety practices, and the operations of safety and risk management programs.
- Ability to effectively solve problems by evaluating situations, considering different approaches, understanding potential outcomes, and taking action to meet objectives.
