BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
This is a very responsible non-supervisory position requiring independent judgement. Duties include passing or failing building permits on inspection, examining plans, scheduling inspections, coordinating with other City departments, and inspecting construction in progress or on final inspection to ensure that building codes are being met. Performs inspections to ensure quality of work and materials used in a variety of projects within the city limits, including construction, repair, maintenance or alteration. Maintains records and prepares reports on projects inspected and conducts research on adopted codes and best practices used by peer cities. Performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility, including inspection, testing, problem-solving, and answering and interpreting code-related questions.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of or demonstrated ability to learn specific city zoning, subdivision requirements, and specific city building code requirements
- Knowledge of accepted safety standards and methods of construction activities
- Knowledge of City, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and TDLR (Texas Department of Labor & Regulations) requirements
- Knowledge of potential or recurring defects and faults in construction
- Knowledge of basic mathematics as applied to construction inspection work
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations
- Skills in or knowledge of all aspects of the building trades
- Skilled in making observations

- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of internal and external customers
- Bilingual is desirable
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school graduate or equivalent and at least two years' experience in a building or electrical trade or its equivalent; OR
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must have sufficient technical training to conduct code enforcement inspections; and
Sufficient technical knowledge to conduct inspections of building construction, plumbing, electrical systems, framing, foundation, and heating and air conditioning systems, including any necessary licenses or certificates
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid Class C Texas driver license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record
Must obtain ICC residential plumbing and electrical certification within six (6) months
ICC Residential Building Inspector six (6) months
Must obtain ICC Commercial Plumbing Inspector within nine (9) months
Must obtain a State of Texas Plumbing Inspector License within one (1) year
Must obtain a Commercial Energy Inspector within eighteen (18) months
Must obtain a Residential Energy Code Inspector/Plans Examiner certification within eighteen (18) months
Preference may be given to candidates that hold one or more ICC certifications in a building code discipline.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDS:
Primarily in an outdoor environment with the ability to operate indoors when needed. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold while outdoors during summer and winter months.

Standard office equipment including multi-line telephone, tablet, smart phone, laptop or desktop computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, shredder, printer, GFCI Tester, 6’ ladder, Plumber Level, etc.
