Job Description
The Fire Training Lieutenant is responsible for planning, coordinating, and conducting technical training and developmental programs for the Department.
Reporting Relationship
The Fire Training Lieutenant reports to the Fire Chief and holds no supervisory role. Reporting
relationship subject to change in the future.
Work Hours
Flexible scheduling as approved by the Fire Chief to maximize availability and supports the needs of the Department and its members. Requires a minimum of 30 hours per week.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Develop and implement fire training programs for department members related to promotional and leadership development, SOGs, and new departmental processes.
- Research training materials, prepare curriculums, and develop content for internal training and the Fire Academy.
- Conduct monthly internal training directly or through supervising instructors and participants.
- Manage the Fire Academy from applicant acceptance to graduation; minimum of two
graduating classes annually.
- Collaborate with other divisions to identify training needs and objectives.
- Participate in skills testing of new and existing members.
- Organize training events as requested by outside agencies.
- Respond to emergency incidents as requested for operational functions or training purposes.
- Participate in budget planning for the Fire Training Division.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Ability to develop, implement, and manage training content.
- Work well independently and in a team environment.
- Lead and effectively communicate with members for training programs.
- Ability to apply critical thinking skills and develop effective solutions to problems.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) and able to quickly adapt to new
software applications.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of:
- Fire service operations and Chain of Command
- NFPA standards
- SFFMA and TCFP
- Experience:
- Minimum of three (3) years of current, active service with a fire department
- Must currently hold TCFP Basic Structure Firefighter, Fire Instructor I, and EMT-B; or
obtain these certifications within 12 months of hire date
- Must have or obtain TCFP Fire Officer I and Fire Instructor II within 12 months of hire
date
- Communication Skills:
- Strong interpersonal skills for daily interactions with outside agencies, department
members, and officers.
- Proficient in communicating via multiple methods – face-to-face, phone, and e-mail.
- Ability to accomplish job responsibilities while still maintaining a positive, professional
work environment with cadets and department members.
