Nature of Work
To promote Las Cruces as a visitor destination to individual and tour groups in order to generate Lodger’s Tax and Gross Receipts Tax to the community.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Solicits new tourism business for Las Cruces from tour operators, travel agents, group leaders, auto clubs, and other tourism/business related organizations
- Conducts face-to-face and telemarketing sales utilizing association membership listings, networking contacts, and existing files and develops sales reports for appropriate agencies.
- Exhibits at regional and national trade shows to increase Las Cruces as a travel destination, selecting targeted shows that would be most beneficial.
- Evaluates, selects, prepares for, and attends meetings and conferences for tourism organizations and associations regionally and nationally.
- Identifies and contacts tour operators who currently bring tours and new tour operators who may potentially bring tours in order to promote Las Cruces as a stop-over destination.
- Conducts familiarization tours for tour operators, travel agents, airlines, and auto clubs.
- In collaboration with the CVB Director, develops advertising programs in publications which promote Las Cruces as a tourist destination.
- Develops direct-mailing programs to solicit new tourism business to Las Cruces.
- Responds to inquiries from group tours and tour operators, providing appropriate promotional information.
- Maintains a current database of tour operators, motorcoach, and travel agents.
- In collaboration with the Media Publications Specialist, develops and maintains appropriate sales materials such as the Tour Planner Guide, promotional items, direct mailers, photos, Tour Operator Newsletter, brochures, and maps in order to sell Las Cruces as a visitor destination.
- Develops and maintains a cohesive working relationship with local hotels, service providers, attractions, and restaurants by attending various meetings to encourage support in soliciting tourism business to Las Cruces.
- Develops and distributes the monthly Tourism Report, which consists of department activity and statistical data, to the CVB Director and Board of Advisors.
- Develops and executes the Tourism Marketing Plan in order to schedule and arrange the work plan for the year.
- Develops and implements the Tourism Sales budget.
- Performs administrative support such as preparing correspondence, reports, proposals, and bids.
- Attends interoffice and interdepartmental meetings as necessary.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Marketing, Hospitality and Tourism, or related field plus three (3) years of sales experience in a Convention & Visitors Bureau, hotel, or directly-related field. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Valid NM Class D driver's license required.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Technical level reading, writing, and editing skills. Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, budgeting, and organizational skills. Ability to attend meetings away from the office and travel out of town when necessary. Working knowledge of personal computer with MS Office or similar software programs, computer printer, scanner, copier, telephone, fax machine, calculator, RISO printing machine, paper folding machine, paper shaker, postage meter, electronic scale, and paper cutter; maintain courteous, respectful, and effective working relationships with City employees and the public; communicate effectively orally and in writing; respond appropriately to public inquiries and present a positive public image.
