The class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Leads and participates in the work of unskilled and semi-skilled workers and equipment operators in the installation, repair, maintenance or construction of water and sewer lines and facilities.
• Estimates materials and equipment needed for each job; orders adequate supplies.
• Locates and marks water and sewer lines and services.
• Installs safety shield for trenches and manholes; digs and installs manholes; digs and installs storm drains; digs and cleans out drainage ditches; installs water valve pits, piping and meters; and sterilizes water lines.
• Leads and participates in the installation of water and sewer taps, large meter taps and pits; repairs and replaces sewer and water lines, parts and related facilities; and tests water and sewer lines for leakage. • Makes repairs to broken system components.
• Collects water samples for testing; conducts routine tests as required.
• Reads water meters to verify billing accuracy; removes meters and delivers non-payment notices as directed.
• Assists with backflow prevention program and fire hydrant testing procedures.
• Inspects equipment for proper and safe working condition; ensures the timely maintenance and repair of equipment as needed.
• Operates heavy equipment as necessary to assist subordinates in completing assigned projects including, but not limited to, back hoes, track hoes, boring machines, front-end
loaders, trucks, etc.; operates specialized camera equipment to inspect water/sewer
lines; uses a variety of hand and power tools; and inspects equipment for proper and
safe working condition
• Supervises assigned crew members. Supervisory duties include instructing; assigning,
reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities;
selecting new employees; acting on employee problems; recommending employee
discipline; and recommending discharge as appropriate.
• Reviews the work of crew members for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and
makes recommendations as appropriate; and offers advice and assistance as needed.
• Supervises the proper clean-up of work sites at project completion; performs general
grounds keeping work at well sites.
• Ensures crew members perform all work in compliance with applicable policies,
procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
• Receives and responds to inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance from
customers and the general public regarding areas of responsibility.
• Estimates materials and equipment needed for each job; orders adequate supplies.
• Prepares and submits detailed work records and reports; completes time sheets.
• Attends training as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED.
Requires at least four (4) years of related work experience.
One year of supervisor training required.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
Class A CDL License required.
Must possess a Class "D" Wastewater Collection license.
Must possess a Water Distribution Class "D" license or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire date.

Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to my co-workers or others.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position; typical work hours and days are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and must work 40 hour each week to maintain full-time status. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays during emergencies or as requested. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.
