You’ll Be Responsible For

Scheduling: This position requires a consistent and reliable schedule, making it a great fit for candidates who are comfortable with evening and weekend work. Park Rangers are scheduled to work every other weekend (depending on Park, Special Events and Facility’s needs) including both Saturday and Sundays, with shifts extending until at least 10:00 p.m. The position requires a minimum of 18 hours per week, with the opportunity to work up to a maximum of 25 hours weekly. A set, predictable schedule will be assigned at the time of job acceptance, allowing candidates to plan ahead while supporting our parks during some of their most active hours.

Education And/or Experience
Must be at least 21 years of age with a minimum of 2 years of experience of extensive public contact and community relations, and interpreting and enforcing regulations, preferably in a park setting. Previous experience as a Park Ranger and experience enforcing ordinances and park rules is desired. Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in parks and recreation, natural resource management, or a closely related field, and bilingual English/Spanish is desired.
Knowledge Of
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Parks, trails, open space and park facilities, general park maintenance, principles of outdoor recreation, and interpretation of municipal codes.
- Radio communication protocols, safe driving and cycling rules and practices, vehicle operations, basic fire suppression techniques, basic traffic control methods.
- Organization and functional responsibilities of the Police, Fire and Public Works and Community Services Departments; PC 832 requirements, including citation preparation and arrest procedures, City ordinances and rules, First-Aid, CPR, Pepper Spray regulations, and other emergency procedures.
- Principles of public speaking, and principles and techniques of supervision and management.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment, record keeping, current computer software.
Ability To
- Diffuse difficult situations.
- Effectively enforce policies, rules, and laws; exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs and resolve conflicts among park/trail users.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees, communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.
- Walk, hike, bicycle ride, and climb hills, stairs, and uneven terrain, work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Maintain records and prepare clear, complete, and concise reports; communicate effectively and appropriately on a two-way radio; make public presentation.
- Work extended hours, irregular rotating shifts, alternative work schedules, holidays, and weekends; successfully complete required training and obtain required certifications and licenses.
- Handle medical or other emergencies and injuries in a calm and effective manner including providing basic first aid and CPR.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a good driving record and be insurable by the City's insurance provider is a condition of employment. Within 6 months of employment complete, required trainings and certifications including but not limited to P.C. 832 training, Pepper Spray, First Responder Certification, CPR, and First Aid.
Subject to Department of Transportation regulations including pre-employment drug testing, and subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to operate a motor vehicle and to inspect various sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and make inspections; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio. The job involves field inspection work requiring frequent walking at inspection site areas to monitor performance and to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or mobile device and to operate standard office equipment Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance or the use of proper equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Employees who work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may be exposed to blood and body fluids when rendering First Aid and CPR. Employees are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees are required to interact with and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures and are required to resolve conflicts and diffuse situations.
